Harley is of course one of the oldest names in motorcycles. They created the cruiser that the Japanese are copying today. It stands to reason that if you want the "real McCoy," you want a Harley.
Some U.S. bikers are swayed heavily by the fact that Harleys are made in the U.S., but these are people who are stuck in the 20th-century nationalist mode of thinking. What the U.S. is really about is freedom, the freedom to live your life as you see fit, even if that involves buying a Japanese motorcycle.
The truth is that there are many fine Japanese cruisers. You have a lot more choice from Japan too. Want a lightweight, reliable cruiser? Get the Savage. Want a sport cruiser? Get the Honda Magna. Want a Harley clone? Get a Shadow. Want a dragster? Get the Yamaha V-Max.
